Rock Steady Boxing

In this corner, HOPE. Fighting Back Against Parkinson’s!

CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) is an innovative nonprofit gym in Indianapolis, founded in 2006. Its mission is to offer effective physical exercise for people living with Parkinson’s. Surprisingly, this non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness routine significantly enhances the ability of individuals with Parkinson’s to lead independent lives. Scott C. Newman, a former Marion County prosecutor, established RSB after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at age 40.

RSB empowers people with Parkinson’s disease to combat their condition through non-contact boxing-style fitness programs. These programs enhance quality of life and boost self-worth. Recent studies suggest that intense exercise may have “neuro-protective” effects, potentially delaying symptom progression.

At RSB, trainers provide encouragement through a “tough love” approach, pushing participants to achieve maximum effort in speed, strength, balance, and flexibility. Boxing engages the body in all planes of motion and keeps routines varied as participants progress. RSB classes show that anyone, regardless of their Parkinson’s stage, can reduce symptoms and lead a healthier, happier life.

Certified Rock Steady Boxing Coaches lead classes designed to target Parkinson’s at its vulnerable neurological points. These workouts focus on overall fitness while enhancing strength, reaction time, and balance. Participants engage in various activities, including ring work, focus mitts, heavy bags, speed bags, double-ended bags, jump rope, core exercises, calisthenics, and circuit weight training.

Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of experience level or age. Boxers range from their mid-30s to early 90s, including both men and women.

Classes are offered weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM and are FREE to YMCA members, $20 monthly for all others.
