The Portage Township YMCA is proud to partner with the American Red Cross to host a lifesaving blood drive for our community. Local blood drives play a critical role in helping hospitals maintain a safe and stable blood supply for patients in need. By participating in this blood drive at the YMCA, you are making a direct impact on families, neighbors, and individuals across Northwest Indiana.
Hosting blood drives is part of the YMCA’s ongoing commitment to strengthening our community and promoting healthy living. Whether you are a first-time donor or a regular supporter of blood drives, your donation helps ensure lifesaving care is available when it matters most.
Types of Blood Donations Available
During this blood drive, donors may be eligible to give either Power Red or whole blood, depending on blood type and Red Cross requirements.
Power Red Donation
A Power Red donation focuses on collecting red blood cells, which are often used in trauma situations and emergency care. The donation process returns most of the plasma and platelets back to the donor, allowing your body to recover more quickly. To participate in a Power Red blood drive donation, donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and typically have blood types A negative, B negative, or O positive or O negative.
Whole Blood Donation
Whole blood is the most common type of blood drive donation and is what most donors give. During a whole blood donation, approximately one pint of blood is collected. The process usually takes about one hour from start to finish, including check-in, donation, and recovery time. Whole blood donations are essential for surgeries, cancer treatments, and emergency situations.
How to Register for the Blood Drive
All blood drive appointments are scheduled directly through the American Red Cross website. The Portage Township YMCA proudly serves as a host site for these blood drives but does not manage registrations.
